Story 007 | The Bridge from Revenge to Understanding
In South Africa, the people wanted to build a “historic
bridge” from a past full of conflict to a future full of peace. They had to
decide if the state should be allowed to use the death penalty. Some said it
was a way to get even, but the judges looked at the new Constitution and found
a different way. They said every person, even the worst, has a right to life
and dignity. They spoke about Ubuntu, which means we are all connected
through our humanity. They decided that the state must serve as a role model by
not killing its own people. Is it better to get even or to teach people that
all life is valuable?
